HISTORY

Prior to India's independence it was called the MacLagan Engineering College and was located in Lahore, (in what is today Pakistan).

In 1947 it was moved temporarily to the mountain town of Roorkee and functioned for some time in the Thomson College's campus. The University of Roorkee now I.I.T. Roorkee (probably the oldest engineering University in India) and PEC thus share a close tie. In 1953 it was moved to its own campus to the newest state capital of India: Chandigarh, the city Beautiful.

New Administrative Block

In 1953 the first batch of students arrived in Chandigarh rather than via Roorkee. A total of 20 students were admitted -10 Civil, and 5 each in Electrical and Mechanical. This batch graduated in 1956. It was a three-year program then. It changed to four years only with the 1955 class. Thus there are no graduates for the class of 1958. Also it was in 1953, that the name became Punjab Engineering College, a change from East Punjab Engineering College as it was called while located in Roorkee.

In a major move three "new" branches were added viz. Aeronautical, Metallurgical and Electronics (started in 1964). At the time there were 30 seats for each of these 3 "minor" branches and 90 for each of the 3 "major" branches (Civil, electrical and Mechanical). Production engineering was a diploma program and was probably converted to a degree program sometime in the early 70s.

Here has since grown the roots of this new and dynamic institution in collaboration with the massive Panjab University with the twin campuses lying minutes from each other.

In 1983, Govt. of India started a project Scheme "Nodal Centre, National Technical Manpower Information System" for compiling the data regarding engineers in Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

Environs

Chandigarh, designed by Le Corbusier was Nehru's dream town and is arguably the most clean and beautiful city of Asia. With attractive environs, planned development, wide roads, abundant civic amenities and green parks (including Asia's largest Zakir rose garden) the city is a beacon to India's future. It is in fact a student town with almost 14 colleges and one of the nation's major Universities and a premier center of medical research being housed here.

PEC lies on its North end, in sector 12, sharing the sector with the prestigious PGI, one of the country's most advanced institutes of medicine. The campus is spread over 200 acres of lush lawns, wide roads and many departments, hostels, faculty residences, a stadium, a mini market and a host of other things, which spread out to form a self-contained community in idyllic surroundings.

Academic Departments:

At present P.E.C. has nine departments of Engineering:
Aeronautical, Civil, Computer, Electronics Communication, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Information Technology and Production. Apart from this the campus houses the Chandigarh College of Architecture and the Department of Chemical Engineering is housed in the Panjab University grounds a few minutes walk away.
Now P.E.C. has become deemed university from 2005.

The intake at present is approximately 385 undergraduates a year, broken down as follows:

1   Aeronautical 15
2   Civil 60
3   Computer Science 30
4   Electronics & Communication 60
5   Electrical 60
6   Mechanical 60
7   Metallurgical 40
8   Production 30
9   Information Technology 30
Total 385
